“I love the fact that you don’t name the characters in the script,” Louis says brightly. “Such a clever idea. I’m only guessing, but is it so that they become mirrors for the audience? Like, if we don’t personalize them in that way, we can imagine ourselves in their shoes? Making their choices, facing their fears?”

I almost hug him. “Exactly! Thank you. At last, someone gets it.”

We beam at each other. It’s only been ten minutes since we left the diner but already we’ve discovered so much in common – a shared love of horror and thriller movies, as well as manga comics and ancient cartoons from the 1980s. In fact, we’ve just finished a debate about who is the hottest ThunderCat, Lion-O or Tygra (a victory for Tygra based on the outcome of rock, paper, scissors), when a familiar car bumps up onto the pavement beside us.

“Ah, crap,” I groan.

Louis shoots me a concerned glance as the driver’s window of the vintage VW Beetle whirs down to reveal a grinning Ethan Murray. He has a sidekick sitting beside him in the passenger seat, a kid I don’t recognize with a crew cut and a tongue stud that looks a microbe away from bubonic plague.

“Nice to see you again, Jessica. Out on a date?” Ethan shouts while pumping the accelerator so that the engine roars. I’m not quite sure what point this is supposed to prove. Maybe that he has the basic primate skills of gripping a wheel while using his foot at the same time. “We didn’t get to talk properly the other day about what happened at prom. No hard feelings, eh?”

“Never where you’re concerned,” I mutter under my breath.

“And who’s this pretty boy then?” Ethan coos.

“Oh yes, please do introduce me to your friends, Jesse,” Louis says, bending down and peering into the car. “They look so fun. The one showing off that little tongue stud, what a Petri dish of oozy cuteness. No, darling, please don’t say anything and ruin your brooding allure. And then we have the alpha male.” He plants an elbow on the open window and treats Ethan to a wink. “Aren’t you the charmer? And you think I’m pretty? Too pretty for you to handle, that’s for sure.”

Ethan jerks away. “Bloody queers everywhere these days.”

Louis laughs, spinning round to face me. “He’s discovered our secret, Jesse. And I thought I was being so discreet.”

“Laugh it up, you little bumboy,” Ethan grunts. “And you, Jessica, don’t think that I’m done with you and your mate Loomis either. He humiliated my sister and no one gets away with shaming a Murray. No one.”

He tries to spit on the pavement where we stand but, misfiring, sends a runner of phlegm skating down the side of his driver’s door.

“Might want to clean that up.” Louis sighs. “It’s such a sweet little car.”

Ethan throws a few more homophobic slurs our way before roaring off into the night.

“Bless. Are there many like that in Ferrivale?” Louis says, looking after him.
